We ideally would like to compare the distributions. One slight variation is to compare the Characteristic function of the distributions. Given samples 𝒙 1 , … , 𝒙 N {\bm{x}}_{1},\dots,{\bm{x}}_{N} , the Empirical Characteristic Function (ECF) is defined as ψ ^ N ( 𝒕 ) = 1 N ∑ n = 1 N e − i 𝒕 ⊤ 𝒚 n . \displaystyle\hat{\psi}_{N}({\bm{t}})=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^{N}e^{-i{\bm{t}}^{\top}{\bm{y}}_{n}}. We can now compare our ECF to the one of the target distribution and build the statistic N ∫ | ψ ^ N ( 𝒕 ) − ψ 0 ( 𝒕 ) | 2 ω ( 𝒕 ) d t = N ∫ | ψ ^ N ( 𝒕 ) − e − ∥ 𝒕 ∥ 2 / 2 | 2 ω ( 𝒕 ) d t , \displaystyle N\int|\hat{\psi}_{N}({\bm{t}})-\psi_{0}({\bm{t}})|^{2}\omega({\bm{t}})dt=N\int|\hat{\psi}_{N}({\bm{t}})-e^{-\|{\bm{t}}\|_{2}/2}|^{2}\omega({\bm{t}})dt, if the weighting function is given by ω ( 𝒕 ) = ( 2 π β 2 ) − d / 2 e − ‖ 𝒕 ‖ 2 2 2 \omega({\bm{t}})=(2\pi\beta^{2})^{-d/2}e^{-\frac{\|{\bm{t}}\|_{2}^{2}}{2}} then the following simplification can be made BHEP n , β = \displaystyle\mathrm{BHEP}_{n,\beta}= 1 n ∑ j , k = 1 n exp ( − β 2 ‖ Y n , j − Y n , k ‖ 2 2 ) \displaystyle\frac{1}{n}\sum_{j,k=1}^{n}\exp\left(-\frac{\beta^{2}\left\|Y_{n,j}-Y_{n,k}\right\|^{2}}{2}\right) − 2 ( 1 + β 2 ) d / 2 ∑ j = 1 n exp ( − β 2 ‖ Y n , j ‖ 2 2 ( 1 + β 2 ) ) + n ( 1 + 2 β 2 ) d / 2 . \displaystyle-\frac{2}{\left(1+\beta^{2}\right)^{d/2}}\sum_{j=1}^{n}\exp\left(-\frac{\beta^{2}\left\|Y_{n,j}\right\|^{2}}{2\left(1+\beta^{2}\right)}\right)+\frac{n}{\left(1+2\beta^{2}\right)^{d/2}}. with β > 0 \beta>0 , Baringhaus-Henze-Epps-Pulley.
